Somewhere along the way we started ranking them, as though one contribution mattered more than another.

But the music ecosystem doesn’t work like that. And it never has.

If there is one thing that struck me while reading APRA AMCOS’ submission to the National Cultural Policy Consultation, it was this:

They don’t describe the industry as a hierarchy. They describe it as a series of intersecting lines, with the artist and the audience always at the centre.

That might sound like a subtle distinction. I don’t think it is. I think it’s the biggest shift in how we’ve talked about music in decades.

For years we’ve treated music as though it sits inside the Arts portfolio. As though it’s a discretionary expense. A grant. A subsidy. Something governments support because culture is “nice to have.”

APRA AMCOS has just made a very different argument.

Music is infrastructure. Not metaphorically. Economically. Socially. Educationally. Commercially.

Think about what actually happens when a venue books live music. The venue earns revenue. The bar staff work. The security company invoices. The sound engineer gets paid. The graphic designer creates the artwork. The photographer captures the night. The accommodation provider hosts the touring act. The rideshare driver takes patrons home. The songwriter receives royalties. The publisher administers rights. The booking agent earns commission. The manager builds another opportunity. The audience has a reason to leave the house.

Nobody succeeds alone.

This is why I become uneasy whenever conversations begin with “real musicians.” Because the truth is far more interesting.

The Saturday night cover band playing four hours of songs everyone already knows.....creates the room where tomorrow’s songwriter learns what connects with an audience.

The DJ keeping the dancefloor full until 2am… ...helps the venue stay profitable enough to book live bands next month.

The tribute show attracts audiences who might never otherwise walk through the doors of a regional venue.

The original artist writes the songs that become tomorrow’s soundtracks.

One feeds the next. One doesn’t diminish the other. They’re part of the same ecosystem.

Perhaps that’s why this submission resonated with me. It doesn’t argue for “artists.” It argues for an ecosystem. An ecosystem worth more than $10.76 billion annually. One employing more than 40,000 Australians. One exporting over $1 billion worth of Australian intellectual property to the world every year.

Yet despite those extraordinary numbers, the median Australian music creator still earns only around $14,800 from their craft each year. That isn’t because music lacks value. It’s because we’ve become remarkably good at extracting value from music without always returning it to the people who create the ecosystem.

That’s why this submission isn’t really asking government to fund the arts. It’s asking government to invest in infrastructure. The infrastructure that teaches creativity in schools. That protects copyright in the age of artificial intelligence. That keeps stages open. That helps Australian music be discovered instead of buried beneath algorithms. That supports touring. That strengthens community radio. That builds export markets. That protects First Nations knowledge. That creates places where the next generation can learn.

None of those recommendations exist in isolation. They’re all connected. Just like the industry itself.

In the Musoverse, we spend a lot of time talking how to hack the systems in this industry. Because systems reveal something people often miss.

Every music business—whether you perform your own songs, someone else’s songs, curate playlists as a DJ, manage artists, own a venue, build production, teach, promote or book entertainment—is part of the same operating system. If one part weakens… Eventually the whole network feels it. If one part grows stronger… Opportunity expands for everyone.

Perhaps that’s the most important message hidden inside APRA AMCOS’ submission is to stop asking whether music deserves funding.

Start recognising what music already is. One of Australia’s most valuable business ecosystems.

And like every healthy ecosystem… It survives because every thread matters.

With the winding down of the Live Music Office, APRA AMCOS is now directing much of its advocacy toward one central policy ambition: a federal tax offset scheme designed to support Australia’s live music venues and the industry professionals whose livelihoods depend on them.

This scheme has not yet been approved by the Federal Government. It remains an advocacy position. But the economic case behind it is worth paying attention to.

The report, The Economic Impact of Tax Offsets on the Live Music Industry, prepared by BIS Oxford Economics for APRA AMCOS, does more than argue for government support. It documents something many of us in the live music sector have known in our bones for decades: live music is not a decorative extra for hospitality venues. It is an economic engine.

And one figure says it all.

On average, every live music performance brings 59 additional customers through the door.

For years, I’ve listened to people describe live music as a cost. An expense. A luxury. A nice thing to have if budgets allow.

Yet every week, across Australia, thousands of venue owners quietly make the same decision. They book a musician. They book a band. They book a DJ. Not because they’re philanthropists, but because they’re running businesses.

Now, thanks to a comprehensive economic report commissioned by APRA AMCOS and prepared by BIS Oxford Economics, we finally have numbers that explain why.

The statistic that stopped me in my tracks wasn’t measured in billions of dollars. It wasn’t the jobs created. It wasn’t the tax modelling. It was this.

Every live music performance attracts, on average, 59 more customers than a venue without live music.

Read that again. Not one extra customer. Not ten. Fifty-nine. Every single performance.

That one figure changes the conversation.

One of the most interesting findings in the report is that over 85% of venue revenue generated on live music nights comes from food and beverage sales—not ticket sales.

The artist is not simply providing entertainment. They are creating an environment people choose to leave their homes for. They create atmosphere. Conversation. Connection. Energy. The kind of nights people remember.

For hospitality businesses, those 59 additional customers buy meals, drinks, desserts, coffee and cocktails. They bring friends. They stay longer. They come back.

Live Music Doesn’t Sell Tickets. It Sells Hospitality. Live music isn’t sitting alongside hospitality. It is actively driving it.

Another aspect of the report deserves far more attention than it has received. Throughout the report, musicians are not described as employees waiting to be hired. They are recognised as participants in a commercial ecosystem. Businesses. Independent operators. Creators. Touring professionals. Producers. They invest in equipment. They market themselves. They employ crew. They manage transport, accommodation, insurance, production and promotion. They generate economic activity well beyond the stage.

That distinction matters. Because it recognises what many of us working in the industry have known for decades. A professional musician isn’t simply performing songs. They’re operating a business.

Before COVID, Australia’s venue-based live music industry generated approximately $2.4 billion in direct venue revenue, supported over 23,000 jobs, and saw more than 425,000 performances each year.

Then the pandemic arrived. Live performances fell by around 70%. Many artists left the profession altogether. One in seven venues now believe they’ll never return to the number of gigs they once hosted. The report warns that rebuilding isn’t simply about putting bands back on stages. It’s about rebuilding an entire economic ecosystem. One where venues, artists, agents, promoters, technicians, suppliers, accommodation providers, transport operators and local communities all depend on each other.

This report is stating what we have always known. The Live Music Economy Is Bigger Than the Stage

The modelling found that modest tax incentives encouraging venues to host more live music could deliver:

• More than 200,000 additional live performances each year.

• Around $205 million in additional artist income.

• Hundreds of millions of dollars in extra venue revenue.

• Thousands of new jobs.

• Significant increases in economic activity across hospitality, tourism and regional Australia.

That’s before considering the social value. The friendships. The first dates. The celebrations. The local bands discovering their audience. The regional towns that come alive on a Friday night. Those things don’t fit neatly into an economic model. But they matter.

And perhaps all this time, we’ve Been Asking the Wrong Question? Instead of asking, “Can venues afford live music?” Perhaps we should be asking, “Can venues afford not to have it?”

Because every time a venue chooses live music, the evidence suggests something remarkable happens. On average… Fifty-nine more people walk through the door. Not because government told them to. Not because they had to. Because people are still searching for something that streaming can never replace. A room. A crowd. A song. A shared moment that only exists once.

That’s the quiet power of live music. Not simply as culture. Not simply as entertainment. But as one of Australia’s most valuable small business ecosystems.

And perhaps it’s time we started talking about it that way.

Yet somehow, every Friday night, someone still walks through the doors of their local pub, orders a drink, finds a familiar face, and settles in to hear a musician play songs they know by heart.

For generations, local pubs and clubs have been Australia’s unofficial town squares. They are where communities gather, stories are exchanged, birthdays are celebrated, heartbreaks are forgotten, and victories are toasted.

And at the centre of it all is live music.

Never underestimate the value of a song during uncertain times. In 2026, musicians face enormous challenges. Cost-of-living pressures continue to affect audiences. Venues are balancing rising wages, insurance premiums, energy costs, food costs and increasing competition for every discretionary dollar. Musicians themselves are navigating higher fuel costs, equipment expenses, marketing demands and the reality that simply being a great performer is no longer enough.

Yet history tells us something remarkable.

When times become difficult, people often turn towards music, not away from it.

Research examining music consumption during periods of economic uncertainty found that people actively seek out more positive music experiences as a way of balancing stress, anxiety and social pressures. Music becomes a tool for emotional regulation and wellbeing when the outside world feels uncertain.

A recent review of more than 17,000 participants across multiple live music studies found that attending live music events consistently creates opportunities for connection, belonging, shared identity and community support. The benefits were found across genres, demographics and event sizes.

That matters.

Because loneliness, isolation and financial stress often travel together. A live music venue may not solve those problems, but for a few hours it can remind people they are not facing them alone.

There is another statistic worth considering. Goldman Sachs research found that over the past 30 years, the live music industry grew by an average of 7.3% during recession years, outperforming many other entertainment sectors.

Even more telling, only 6% of consumers surveyed said live music would be the first thing they would cut from their spending if finances became tighter.

Think about that. People will sacrifice many things before they sacrifice experiences that make them feel alive. That is because live music is not simply entertainment. It is human connection. It is belonging. It is collective memory. It is a room full of strangers singing the same chorus at the same moment and remembering that they are part of something larger than themselves.

And bottom line, live local music is the most resilient form of entertainment.

The local musician of 2026 is no longer just a musician.

They are:

• A performer.

• A storyteller.

• A content creator.

• A community builder.

• A brand ambassador.

• A small business owner.

The musicians who thrive will understand that every performance extends beyond the stage. The audience no longer discovers artists solely through posters and venue advertising. They discover them through conversations, videos, social media clips, newsletters, community groups and personal recommendations. Musicians who build relationships will outperform musicians who only build setlists.

Smart venue operators understand something many accountants cannot measure. The value of live music is not found in the ticket price. It is found in the atmosphere. The return customer. The extra hour a patron stays. The friendships formed. The community culture built over years rather than weekends.

A musician who understands a venue’s audience, demographic and business objectives becomes more than an entertainer. They become a partner in building culture. And culture is what transforms a venue from somewhere people visit into somewhere people belong.

None of this means the road is easy. Musicians have always lived with uncertainty. The late Tom Petty understood that reality when he said: “You belong among the wildflowers. You belong somewhere you feel free.”

For many musicians, the stage is exactly that place. Not because it is easy. Not because it is lucrative. But because something inside refuses to stop creating. Refuses to stop connecting. Refuses to stop turning life’s chaos into songs.

The future belongs to musicians who understand one simple truth. The real job is not merely to perform music. Your job is to create moments that people carry home with them. In difficult times, those moments become even more valuable. The local pub stage may seem small. But for someone walking through the door carrying the weight of the world, it can feel like the centre of it.

And that is why local musicians still matter. Perhaps now more than ever.

Recent industry research estimates that Australia’s music industry contributes more than $4 billion annually in direct economic value to the Australian economy, with live music representing the largest component of that contribution. Live performance activity alone contributes more than $1 billion in direct economic value each year, supporting businesses, employment, tourism and hospitality throughout the country.

For pubs, clubs, hotels and entertainment venues, live music is often more than a programming choice. It is a commercial strategy. A strong live music brand can increase patronage, extend customer dwell time, drive food and beverage sales, strengthen venue identity and help establish long-term audience loyalty.

The value created by musicians extends well beyond the stage.

Professional musicians commonly:

• Operate under their own ABN and business structure

• Invest in their own instruments, equipment and production

• Maintain their own insurances and professional registrations where required

• Develop and market their own entertainment brands

• Build and engage their own audiences

• Determine their own repertoire, presentation and performance style

• Provide services to multiple venues, promoters and clients

• Generate income from a range of activities including live performance, recording, production, teaching, consulting and content creation

• Manage their own commercial, taxation and business obligations

In many cases, a musician’s most valuable asset is not the performance itself, but the brand they have spent years building.

As David Bowie observed:

“I always wanted to be in the business of music.”

Likewise, Gene Simmons famously stated:

“The music business is a business.”

Those observations reflect a fundamental truth of the modern entertainment industry.

Professional musicians are not simply individuals supplying labour. They are independent creative enterprises built upon expertise, reputation, audience relationships, intellectual property, artistic identity and commercial investment.

Venues engage musicians because of the unique value they bring to an audience experience. Promoters engage musicians because they help attract and retain customers. Audiences attend because of the connection they feel with a particular artist, brand, repertoire or performance style.

The entertainment outcome is inseparable from the musician’s individual brand, experience and creative identity.

As a result, professional musicians are commonly engaged as independent service providers delivering a specialised entertainment outcome rather than as individuals performing work under the direction and control of another party.

The Australian live entertainment industry thrives because thousands of independent businesses work together to create value for audiences every day. Musicians sit at the very heart of that ecosystem.

Their contribution deserves recognition, not only for its cultural significance, but for its economic impact, entrepreneurial spirit and the value it creates for venues, communities and the broader hospitality industry.

Thank goodness for the professional musicians who are creative entrepreneurs, independent businesses and essential partners in the success of Australia’s live entertainment economy. :-)

This is not fringe activity. This is not subsidised sentiment. This is infrastructure. And the backbone of that infrastructure is not stadium tours. It is the working musicians — the sound-tracking operators — activating rooms across the country every week.

The Identity Problem We Don’t Talk About

On stage, we celebrate autonomy. We celebrate voice. Presence. Authority. Creative command.

Off stage, there are some who too often structure musicians as if they are rostered labour.

There is a distinct contradiction there.

Because the same person who reads a room, shifts a set list, extends a chorus, adjusts energy in real time — that person is not executing a script. They are exercising judgement. That judgement is entrepreneurial. A working musician:

• Invests in equipment

• Maintains insurance

• Manages GST

• Issues invoices

• Negotiates rates

• Absorbs cancellation risk

• Builds brand equity

• Performs for multiple venues

That is enterprise behaviour.

If we culturally frame that person as dependent labour rather than an operator within a supply chain, we create psychological stress. And stress is a performance killer.

A Show Is Not a Shift

Operators think in seasons. Labour Hire thinks in shifts. If a musician sees their work as enterprise, they protect reputation, invest in growth, refine positioning, build market fit. If they see their work as shift-based, delivery becomes transactional.

In a $4.83 billion ecosystem, that distinction matters. Because hospitality revenue is not driven by background noise. It is driven by engagement. Engagement comes from ownership. Ownership is psychological before it is contractual.

The Infrastructure Gap

Here is the uncomfortable truth: The global live music market does not suffer from a talent shortage. It suffers from a systems shortage. Too many working musicians are running viable micro-enterprises out of:

• Email threads

• Text messages

• Memory

• Scattered calendars

• And late-night reconciliation of invoices

That is not sustainable enterprise. That is hustle without infrastructure. And hustle alone does not stabilise an industry.

This Is where some Marketplaces position themselves

Marketplaces with Booking Apps are not here to diminish autonomy. They exist to reinforce it. Not as a gatekeeper. Not as a controller. As infrastructure for independent enterprise.

Live Booking Apps are designed to:

• Centralise gig management

• Formalise contracts

• Enforce cancellation clarity

• Track payments transparently

• Verify administrative integrity

• Maintain professional promo presentation

Not to control artists or suppliers rather to greater support all operators - promoters and artists. Because when structure is present:

• Cognitive load reduces

• Payment friction decreases

• Contractual ambiguity disappears

• Reputation becomes measurable

And when that weight lifts, performance improves. Autonomy on stage is strengthened by stability off it.

The Classification Conversation

This is not an argument against employment where employment is appropriate.

Orchestras. Musicals. Productions. Long-term salaried positions. Defined roles.

Those are legitimate structures.

But where musicians:

• Operate across multiple venues

• Supply their own production

• Invoice independently

• Bear commercial risk

Then structure should reflect supplier status. Correct classification is not ideology. It is accuracy. Misalignment weakens identity. Alignment strengthens ecosystems.

Why This Matters for the Future

The Australian live music economy is growing. International activity contributed approximately $975 million. The broader live performance industry reached $3.4 billion in ticket revenue in 2024, up 6.9% from the previous year. (2) This is a mature sector.

Mature sectors require:

• Clear systems

• Professional standards

• Transparent transactions

• Enterprise recognition

If we want sustainability, we must stop oscillating between two extremes:

Romanticising artists. Or reducing them to labour inputs. Working musicians are neither. They are small business operators inside a commercial cultural economy.

The Alignment We Need

Autonomy on stage. Infrastructure off it. That alignment does three things:

1. Strengthens psychological authority.

2. Increases commercial discipline.

3. Stabilises economic contribution.

Pushworth’s broader positioning is simple: Support independent music enterprise. Build systems that make professionalism easier. Encourage clarity over chaos. Reward delivery over mythology.

Because when musicians operate as recognised enterprises, they:

• Negotiate with confidence

• Perform with authority

• Invest with intention

• Build with longevity

And that strengthens every venue, every audience, and every dollar inside the $4.83 billion ecosystem.

Final Thought

The stage is where culture becomes visible. Infrastructure is where culture becomes sustainable. If we want the Australian live music sector to continue growing — commercially and culturally — we must align identity with structure.

Celebrate the autonomy.

Build the scaffolding.

And recognise the working musician for what they are: An independent operator powering one of the nation’s most dynamic industries.

That is not rhetoric. That is economic fact.

That instinct — plug in, show up, back each other — is the spine of Australian music.

Because Australian music has never been one sound. It’s pub floors and protest songs. Pop hooks and dance floors. Bush poetry, grief, joy, resistance and resilience — often all in the same set.

So what does it mean to celebrate Australia Day outside of politics?

It starts with a nod to the artists who shaped the country’s musical backbone, decade by decade.

The 1970s were when Australia found its voice and turned the amps up — AC/DC, Skyhooks, Cold Chisel, Little River Band, The Angels, Dragon, Farnham, Ross Wilson, Sherbet, Russell Morris.

The 1980s took Aussie music global — INXS, Midnight Oil, Crowded House, Men at Work, Paul Kelly, Hunters & Collectors, The Church, Icehouse, Nick Cave, Mental As Anything.

The 1990s sharpened the edge — Silverchair, Powderfinger, Savage Garden, The Living End, You Am I, Regurgitator, Grinspoon, TISM, The Cruel Sea.

The 2000s blurred the lines — Kylie Minogue, Missy Higgins, Jet, The Avalanches, Wolfmother, Gotye, Empire of the Sun, The Presets, The Waifs, John Butler Trio.

The 2010s stopped asking permission — Tame Impala, Sia, Vance Joy, Flume, Courtney Barnett, RÜFÜS DU SOL, Amy Shark, Angus & Julia Stone.

The 2020s brought new power and new truth — Tones and I, Ocean Alley, G Flip, DMAs, Thelma Plum, The Kid LAROI.

And through every era, essential voices remain non-negotiable: Archie Roach, Yothu Yindi, Gurrumul Yunupingu, Christine Anu, Kev Carmody, Baker Boy, Emily Wurramara.

Icehouse said it best in Great Southern Land: “So you look into the land, it will tell you a story.”

Australia Day isn’t a marketing moment. It’s thousands of hands holding guitars, banging drums, thumping keys and leaning into microphones to tell one story — the story of us.

And on what’s predicted to be one of the hottest Australia Days in years, spare a thought for the Aussie musos standing outside in the heat, sweat dripping into their instruments, still singing the soundtrack of this great southern land.

As Paul Kelly noted “Our songs hold the stories of this country — its people, its heartbreak, and its hope.”

So on this Australia Day, we celebrate the land, the people, and the future — a great southern land held together by music, mateship, and the stubborn belief that if you plug in and pull together, something magic might happen.

• Instruments: Guitars, amps, drum kits, keyboards — never “one and done,” always needing upgrades.

• Cables & leads: The gremlins of the live music world — tangled, broken, lost, repeat.

• Mics, stands & tech: Essential, but every second gig seems to break one.

• Lights, batteries, power boards: You bring the vibe and the electricity.

• Sticks, skins, strings, pedals: The consumables no one factors in.

• Vehicle costs: Fuel, rego, insurance, late-night servo stops.

• Apps & software: Bookkeeping, tax, invoicing.

• Time: Hours rehearsing, loading, unloading, driving, chasing invoices.

That is not a “hobby.” That is an investment portfolio.

The problem? Until now, most musos have been juggling family, jobs, and gigs just trying to keep up. There was no Musoverse dedicated to showing you how to leverage this investment into real returns.

So let’s start here: your gear and your grind are not sunk costs. They are assets — and assets are meant to generate income.

Example:

• That $8,000 PA system? It’s not just for your duo gigs. It can be hired out to other musos for $150 a night.

Shift the lens: stop seeing expenses as drains, and start seeing them as tools.

• Finish the shift at the day job.

• Race home for family dinner.

• Load the car with guitars, leads, stands, batteries, mics.

• Drive across town, set up the PA, check the lights, test the foldback.

• Two hours on stage, then pack it all down, get home at 2am — and do it all again tomorrow.

The audience sees a great night out. What they don’t see is the constant juggling act — job, family, gigs, travel, admin — with barely enough time to breathe, let alone build a business plan.

And yet, behind every weekend show is a massive investment ledger:

• Instruments (and their upgrades, because gear never stays “done”).

• Leads, cables, adapters (the gremlins of live music).

It’s not just what you say. It’s when. It’s how. It’s why.

This isn’t about stage fright—it’s about stage presence. Because if you can’t command attention between songs, you risk losing it during them. Here's how to nail it—any room, any time.

🎙️ Top 10 Strategies for Talking to Any Audience as a Performer

1. Know Your Role in the Moment

Are you the MC? The musical guide? The hype engine? The storyteller? Sometimes you’re all of them. Sometimes just one. Reading the room (yes, again) will tell you whether to amplify the vibe or step back and set the scene. Speak from that place.

2. Speak With Purpose, Not Panic

Silence between songs isn’t a crime—but dead air with no intention? That’s awkward. When you speak, be clear about why: to connect, to reset, to thank, to build energy, or to guide the crowd. Don’t babble. Don’t over-apologise. Don’t explain yourself. Just own the moment.

3. The Mic Is Not a Megaphone

Volume isn’t authority. Don’t shout at the audience—speak to them. Use tone, pace, and warmth. You’re not commanding a battlefield—you’re inviting them into an experience. Be real. Be relatable. Be audible.

During the COVID lockdowns, I responded to an ad on LinkedIn seeking Industry people to mentor and guide musicians in a Post Pandemic Recovery Program. My application, complete with my business experience and biography was approved and I was scheduled a phone call with one of the Organisers.

We began chatting about the program and my experience in the industry until he stopped for a moment and said : “Oh no, your agency books cover acts. No we cant have that. Sorry.” And he abruptly hung up on me.

Even though at the time we were managing original Artists, running our own Record Label and had been touring Major Australian Artists across Australia for the past few decades, none of that mattered because we also booked cover acts on behalf of our venue partners.

I felt sorry for him. So limited by his industry experience, so indoctrinated by his fear of missing out, so small minded in his business approach, I was happy to have dodged that bullet.

But the whole conversation haunted me because even now, in 2024, there is still such prejustice about covers versus original music.

To us, responding to market demand and working in the coal face with promoters and audiences, both offer value and both are necessary.

So here is my Top 25 list of Music Industry benefits that Cover Musicians offer:

The Australian Music Therapy Association notes this:

“Music therapy is a research-based allied health profession in which music is used to actively support people as they aim to improve their health, functioning and well-being. It can help people of all ages to manage their physical and mental health and enhance their quality of life.”

Here we are in 2024 and it is clear that live music shows offered by pubs and clubs now form part of a growing wellbeing index for audiences.

We are witnessing an unprecedented time of opportunity for our industry right now.

The standard so called industryt players are talking doom and gloom. Tony Burke - who I love and admire - recently released funding for Live Music Venues and Arts Practitioners.

But I regret to say that he completely missed the point.

Again.

The bottom line is that until audiences get what THEY want, businesses in this industry will continue to go broke. Governments cannot legislate audiences to want to buy tickets for shows or festivals that simply do not interest them.

Bottom line - Right now, audiences desire to engage with music that makes them feel good, distracts them from the challenges of their lives, and offers them comfort and certainty.

When we feel uncertain about our future: rising prices, global political unrest, financial recovery from the lockdowns still pinching people, and a health baseline that now documented as compromised, we seek comfort and familiarity. In Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, we globally and collectively sit in the second lowest level – Safety and Security. In this space, we do not have the capacity to take on anything new and therefore seek the known and the familiar.

Right now, the current trend of Australian audiences in this market cycle swings away from emerging music with one exception - COUNTRY music. Audiences are also hungry for legacy acts. But the biggest surprise is that since our time running our agency, right now is the highest level of market demand for high quality Tribute shows and Soundtrack (cover) shows..

So what do these things have in common?

Both Country and Soundtrack music follow familiar easy rhythmic and melodic patterns and offer ease of engagement for the consumer in a nostalgic time machine.

Music Festivals and Original Music Venues are packing up and closing their doors. Yet at the same time, audiences across the country are flocking to their local pub and club eager to enjoy the comfort of the familiar.

The psychology behind this current trend appears to be driven by the economic aftermath of the COVID lockdowns and the clearly current unsustainable financial landscape that 2024 offers.

Music Artists, Festival Promoters and Venues that offer the market what it wants are faced with fortuitous circumstances right now.

It is a fine time indeed for Music to mean business.😊

One of my friends commented recently that you would have to be an idiot to be a musician these days. “What a waste of time that is. For what? Nothing.”

I paused for a minute and then asked her what her wedding would have been like without the seven piece band that she hired. What would it be like to go to the movies with a soundtrack on any of the commercials OR the main feature? What would the soundtrack to her life be without…. well the soundtrack? Those moments in our memory – what song was playing when your crush asked you to dance in grade nine? What song was playing at the dentist when you got your first filling? What about all the songs that followed us around a supermarket or on any purchasing decision we made - Aeroplane Jelly, Vegemite, Louie the Fly, Maccas (I’m lovin’ It), Bananas (make those bodies sing) AAMi (lucky you’re with) Aussie Kids are Weetbix Kids and of course Qantas (I still call Australia Home).

I reminded my friend of the musical mathematical matrix that influences our biochemistry and accompanies every aspect of our human experience.

She smiled and nodded “fair enough” however, her comment was a reflection of a distinct lack of comprehension of the complexity and specialty involved in working as a musician. Most people take music for granted like it’s a disposable no thing – anyone can do it, right?

Consider the years where the Music Industry across the planet was rudely interrupted? It wasn’t until we couldn’t just go out and see live music, that we realized just how important it was. From the Virtual Zoom concert, the Drive In Theatre concert, the fenced off corralled areas for audiences to sit – nothing matched the energy of a live music show.

Because what we are all actually looking for is a hit.

A hit of higher frequency.

Going to a bar, club, pub or concert hall, there is a live energy exchange between the audience and the musicians on stage, the bar staff and the patrons, the physical location, the environment inside the venue. Everything is vibrating at a higher frequency when you add live music into that environment.

It really doesn’t matter about the quality of musicianship, vocals, entertainment or even sound quality. Even though, of course, those things are vitally important, what the audience is truly seeking is to raise their own vibration.

Marilyn Manson once famously said “Music is the strongest form of magic.” The magic of the increase in frequency alone is a pretty major health benefit in itself. For that alone, it is impossible to underestimate the contribution that musicians make to the world every time they step out on stage.

But if we examine the elements of what it takes to deliver a live show on stage, it becomes crystal clear that the knowledge, expertise and capacity required for a working musician are actually highly in demand skills across every industry. Simply by being a working musician, you are quite literally building a monster resource and resume that will equip you for any job in any situation in any market.

Start with physical strength. Gigging musos have the dedication of a high-level athlete who conditions and builds strength in order to load the gear into the van, out at the gig, back into the bar and then back home again. To execute this at least five times a week, a precise exercise and stretching routine is necessary. Like an Olympian in training, a succinct risk management plan is in place for manual handling to more efficiently manage the heavy-duty lifting areas like knees, backs, wrists, elbows and shoulders. Stretching, breathing and specific exercises mitigate the collective RSI to build capacity into those areas.

Gigging musicians tune their instruments, and they tune into their bodies. A vocalist identifies which factors will influence the quality of the vocal delivery. So whether it's sleep, stress, diet, temperature; as a vocalist, risk factors are pin pointed and addressed. The ensuing development and management of a thoroughly researched, tested and disciplined practice oversees the preservation of the vocals in the face of multiple shows back-to-back. Like a scientist, the application of a meticulous wellness strategy manages the elements of recovery when needed.

Gigging musicians instinctively know how to read a room. Just as they tune into their bodies, they tune into their environment and can discern the right song at the right time, when to fill dance floor, when to fill the bar or how to wind the event down in a perfectly timed slow dance. They modulate the frequency.

Gigging musicians are masters of logistics, advancing shows, coordinating suppliers, installations, calculating stage dimensions and scheduling specific elements of the live show to create the spectacle.

As Influencers, self and cross promotion is second nature. Scoping and planning photo shoots for the best promo shots, writing copy, pressers and bios, designing brands and digital assets, setting up social media pages, teasing interesting and leveraging marketing assets and stories to build the music brand are all quite literally in a day’s work. When it comes to finding gigs, nothing gets in the way of selling the music brand to agents, event managers and promoters.

Gigging musicians are craftsmen maintaining instruments and equipment with the utmost precision. A broken guitar string won’t stop the show. There is nothing a ball of gaff cannot fix. A gigging musician can fix, repair and replace anything in the shortest amount of time. Few other humans can walk into a room and feel 250hZ in their chest and engineer any mixing desk to find the perfect mix.

Like a relationship savant, building long term connections with fans, punters, bar staff and security guards as well as retailers and instrument repairers simply comes naturally. Dealing with hecklers and overzealous fans develops high level communication skills simply to survive.

The concept of creativity has a fascinating history. For the ancient Greeks, a concept of art, in Greek is “techne”. This forms the root of the words “technique” and “technology”. Creativity then followed a pattern of rules even under the influence of inspiration and imagination.

Of course, for medieval Christians, the word Creation from the Latin “creatio” was in no way related to human activity, rather it was reserved for the concept of “creation from nothing” being an act of God.

In the Renaissance, philosophers and artists began to float alternative notions where Creativity was related to freedom of expression with the Latin “excogiatio” identifying creativity as being more devising, considering and contriving something new i.e. a divergence.

It was 1950, when JP Guilford, as new president at the American Psychological Association, proposed that creativity was essential for human society. This sparked a modern scientific quest for creativity studies leading us to today in 2021, a post COVID society seeking creative solutions to a variety of 21st century challenges.

What does that mean for the millions of creative beasts working in a Music Industry that has been decimated thanks to global COVID lockdowns?

What is the collective creative solution that music as a product, offers humanity? Oh boy, let me count the ways. But the real challenge here is not the music. It is the psychology and culture of the business that surrounds the music where we need clarity before we can begin to account for its social creative solutions.

For the majority of musicians, the ever-present vision of making it as a big star, looms large. Yet the reality is, that a very small number of artists will make it big, thus inevitably leading to a pandemic of poverty and mental health issues in the Music Industry.

We need to explore why that is so. Why do music artists seek fame and fortune instead of building their business? Why is it a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll?”

If we jump into the deep end of the current digital ocean, we literally swim past trillions of creative content items. To say the market is saturated is like saying it stings a bit when your leg is being amputated. A truly terrible visual but it’s the same in the current market. Our Social Media experience over the past decade has birthed new generations of digital creators. Blogs, Podcasts, Vines, Videos, Lives, AMAs, Hangouts. We humans literally have a Creator Studio at our fingertips where we can film, record, write, edit, produce and share with our followers in a matter of minutes from our phones. We live in a world where anyone can influence millions of followers. What would once take a large budget and team and a few intensive months can be delivered in 1000^th of the time and cost.

Music fans are not only consumers, but they are now creators.

The competition for an emerging music artist is not just the big labels and legacy artists or their emerging artist peers but their fans themselves.

It costs a truckload to record and release. So if you are going to do that, you need to have a clear understanding of your ROI in all the levels of your value hierarchy not just financial.

So to begin to establish your strategy of ROI, how can music artists cut through the noise and be heard in this vast ocean of content?

To start with, music artists can no longer see themselves as separate to the business process. They need to be real about what it is that they are actually doing. A wishlist for fame and fortune can sit on your Vision board but it will be on the Balance Sheet where reality will seriously slap you until you establish your true core strategy.

No one is coming to make you a star. Let that sink in. No one is coming to make you a star. You are the one that you are waiting for. Not an agent, manager, publicist, label, promoter or even fans. You are the greatest asset in your career. You are the greatest resource in your music business. But until you inventory the why, how, where, when, who and what, you will be vulnerable to your own wish list fantasy as well as the market forces. 

Humans in the 21^st century are for the most part, time poor, which of course is a primary feature driving our addiction and dependence on technology. Faced with this deep ocean of content, rather than drowning, we deploy our often unconscious hierarchy of values when choosing which content to consume. This is why a healthy understanding of your target market and your niche is key in your ability to cut through the noise and find your superfans.

And for a world needing inspiration to rebuild? What does music mean to them now?

Music is embedded into society. It is a reflection of society. Music mirrors values as each spin of the cultural cycle waves its way through history. Each decade has its own texture and flavour expressed and generated through music. Across time zones, languages, cultural heritages and geographics, each generation in each culture carves out a tangible representation of what each decade has meant through its music.

What is a family without music? What is a society without music? What is a life without music? What is a culture without music? Music reflects and creates social conditions – including the factors that either facilitate or impede social change. It is shared via technology or via organically passing it on generation to generation. Whether we hear it externally OR it emerges from deep within us, the soundtrack of our lives plays 24 hours a day inside our heads and within our bodies.

Music goes beyond words. Music activates our memory. Music enables meanings to be shared. Music promotes the development and maintenance of individual, group, cultural and national identities. At an individual level it can induce multiple responses – physiological, movement, mood, emotional, cognitive and behavioural. Music is therapy. Music is relaxing. Music stimulates the production of endorphins.

Early connection between mama and baby are musical in quality. Holding our pregnant bellies, we sing to our growing little person, our voices in lilting tones, our melodies in harmony with our bodies ability to create life. We sing and dance to learn and play. We lullaby and sway to soothe. We entrain to each other through the music.

My mother told me recently that when she brought me home from the hospital as a newborn, I would rock myself to sleep by kicking the side of the bassinet from day one. I sang before I spoke. Before real words formed, I created my own language and sang repetitive songs as I was learning to walk. I remember receiving a toy piano when I was 3 and I taught myself how to play all my favourite songs until it broke from overuse. If I was in trouble, I would sit in my bedroom walk in robe and sing loudly to calm myself down. Wherever we went, I sniff out the closest piano and sit for hours playing whatever music was inside of me. I begged my parents for piano lessons but in those days, the catholic nuns refused to teach anyone until they were 8. By the time I finally turned 8, my repertoire was massive. I played with twenty cent pieces on each hand. If one dropped, the nun would cane my leg with a feather duster. Swift and fast. I learned how to play through anything keeping those coins on my hands come what may.

The Queen visited Townsville when I was 8. I was chosen to play the piano during her visit to the school. The only thing I remember was the shimmering of that frilly lemon dress I wore with the ferocious sweat as I played God Save The Queen through my nerves. I wrote songs for the choir, for church service and for myself. From the age of 12, I had a little business where I sold my transcribed music for all the latest songs on the radio. I was the kid behind the curtain at assembly every day playing piano, running the microphone and production, conducting the choir, accompanying everyone at school concerts and running the show behind the scenes at school, at church and at family and neighbourhood events. I did weddings, funerals, parties and everything in between. I was burning with desire to sing on stage. I needed to be seen. I just had to be heard. Each boyfriend would get angry at me for singing along to the radio. My parents would joke with their friends about how weird I was that I was always playing piano, writing songs and singing my heart out.

Music gave me a place to belong. It was my home. And throughout every significant experience in my life, I have been transported back to each moment in the first few bars of the song that lives in that memory.

How does music influence how we feel in a location, during an experience or buying a product? Music is repetitive and entrains us into a trance like state thus reducing stress, manipulating mood and alleviating boredom. We don’t think about music. We feel it and anchor the experience we are having at the same time into a memory.

How do we explore an individual’s subjective experiences of music? How do we explore groups of people in social settings subjective experiences of music? How is music used to get us to perform a certain task? What particular types of music might stimulate orderly exits from large public functions, reduce the incidence of disorder in particular settings, increase tolerance when people have to queue for relatively long periods of time or engender feelings of well-being and safety in public places?

Music is consumed by us in every moment and at every significant milestone. We tune into the various frequencies on the radio in your car, on TV and movie soundtracks and advertisement jingles, the white noise at the gym, local shop, pub, club, sporting event, waiting rooms and clinics. Weddings, parties, events, functions, celebrations, and funerals. Lives punctuated by soundtracks, life playlists curated and packaged subliminally to disseminate a diverse range of messaging and influence.

As a medium, music offers the value of a time machine. As a vehicle, music offers the value of a hypnotist.

If I ask you the question, what does music look like, can you tell me?

No?

Why?

Is that because music has the alchemical ability to look like anything? everything?

The limitless landscape and ecosystems of music seed the sales for future products in every possible form.
